Hello,
Welcome to my web site. If you have found this site, you are either my student or the parent or guardian of one of my students. This site is designed to help you manage the various aspects of my Social Studies program by answering frequently asked questions.
Question #1: What will we study?
Eighth grade Social Studies explores the events of the 20th century both in the United States and the worldand the CHANGES that occurred because of the events.
Question #2: Will homework be posted?
Yes. I will post homework every day. Homework will be also posted on the white board in class. Make sure you utilize your agenda for keeping track.
Question #3 Do we explore current events?
Absolutely! The first five to ten minutes of every class is called NEWS AND VIEWS. All students are expected to be prepared daily to discuss current happenings. We will watch Channel I news every in class. We also subscribe to Upfront magazine which is a current events magazine of the New York Times for 8th graders.
Question #4 Do we really have to come in costume for some events?
YES, YES, YES!!! Role playing is a phenomenal technique to get the feel of history. Don’t worry, everybody dresses up on the same day. I do, too.
Question #5 Will we be required to write research papers?
Two major ones -one in the fall and one in the spring. These both require individual research. The Africa research project is a group project. I also assign short one-week mini-projects which are sometimes individual and sometimes group. I will assign the groups at times, other times you will self-select.
Question #6 Is it true that food is involved in some of the projects?
YOU BET!
Question #7: Do we have quizzes and/or tests?
Quizzes -one usually every one to two weeks. I prefer projects
Question #8: Is there any choice in how projects are presented?
MULTIPLE modes of presentation are encouraged IMAGINATION and CREATIVITY are the key words.
