WELCOME TO GRADE 7   SOCIAL STUDIES HOMEWORK PAGE!!!! NOTE: Homework will be assigned most nights so please check both the classroom board and this website.     Hidden vocabulary words will be highlighted in pink; the first student to tell me its meaning in the morning gets a stamp for his or her auction card ;)

2011-2012 School Year

May 8- Finish Ch. 14, section 3 “Identify” terms and “Reviewing for Details” questions if not done in class.

May 3-8- Research, READ, take notes to prepare for your Civil War mini- presentation. Plan a class activity to go with your lesson. See me for help if you need it.

May 2- Finish the question sheet that goes with the two articles read in class about the Civil War Navy.

April 30- Read at least two Civil War letters (go to one of the links on my home page) and write a summary about one of the letters. Include who wrote the letter, what it was about, how he or she felt or what tone the letter conveyed.

April 26- Read one of the two primary source document: Civil War letters and write notes in the margin. What is he saying? What surprises you? What do you question? etc.

April 24- Chapter 14, section 2: Read and answer the two”Reviewing for Details” questions and the one Critical Thinking question.

ALL PROJECTS/ JOURNALS DUE! BRING YOUR PROJECT, JOURNAL ETC. IN ON MONDAY, TUESDAY OR WEDNESDAY. LATE GRADES GIVEN AFTER WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21.

April 16- Find at least two interesting facts/ information about the Civil War to share with the class tomorrow. Use the links on the this website.

March 28- You should each have an argument that you are going to give in your team’s debate. Find specific information, data, quotes etc. to support your idea.

March 27- Read and highlight your short article about the North, South or West in the 1850s. Think about and write out THREE reasons (arguments) to say that that region was most important in that time.

March 22- Finish your “3-2-1″ on the article, “Seneca Falls”.

March 8- 18: Write your O.T. journal/ Build your O.T. (West) Project. See me if you have any questions!

March 1-8 Research and decide on your Westward Expansion/ Oregon Trail Project. Start your work!

Feb. 29- Finish the Oregon Trail Scavenger Hunt Part II

Feb. 26- p. 272 Define the “Identify” terms/ names and answer the two “Reviewing for Details” questions.

Feb. 23- Read and take notes on chapter 12, section 2. (Vocabulary word from class and for a stamp- retribution! You must give the word and its meaning for a stamp).

Feb. 22- Chapter 12, section 1: Review the reading and notes. “Questions” tomorrow :)

Feb. 16-17- Chapter 12, section 1: Read and take notes.

Feb. 8- No Homework. Student led conferences :)

Feb. 7- Study for quiz (ch.11, sections 1-3 only)

February 6- If “Mountain Men” article and “3-2-1″ not done in class finish for homework. QUIZ on Wed.

January 31- Read and take notes- ch.11, section 2. (QUIZ on chapter 11, sections 1-3 will be next Tuesday or Wednesday.)

January 30- Read and take notes- ch. 11, section 1.

January 24- Choice of the following: Either watch (or listen to) 20-30 minutes of the State of the Union Address tonight OR find a news item. For the one you choose complete a “3-2-1″ assignment. (REMINDER: 3 things you learned and why each is important, 2 things you wonder about and possible answers and 1 thing you are concerned or surprised about. ALSO- Practice for presentations this week!

January 19- PRESENTATIONS START TOMORROW! Be sure to practice using your index cards. If you bring a note from a parent that you presented to him/ her you get five stamps on your auction card!

January 18-  Finish index cards with notes and prepare your presentation. PRACTICE and know your topic!

January 6- 17- Read and research your 19th U.S. History topic for your glog presentation! KNOW your topic and create an interesting glog (on your account at edu.glogster.com). Be sure to include my teacher code. See me if you need help.

January 4- Finish reading chapter 10 (section 4). Answer the Reviewing for Details questions on p. 237. If you have not yet decided on a topic – read and research to find a topic that you are interested in!

January 3- Finish reading section 3 in chapter 10. Decide on your research topic.

December 19- Finish notes for sections 1 and 2 of chapter 10 if not finished in class.

December 14- Finish reading and highlighting the article, “Going Places”

December 12- Read section 4 (in chapter 9) and answer the “Reviewing for Details” questions on p. 217

December 7- Read section 3 of chapter 9. Parent signatures on quiz. Be ready to discuss  the reading!

December 6- Read section 2 of chapter 9. Get parent signatures on your quiz. Block 2 will get their quizzes tomorrow.

December 5- Finish reading section 1 of chapter 9: “From Farms to Factories” and take notes

December 1-2: Study for Quiz on Monday (on ch. 8- sections 2-4)

November 30- Read section 4 and finish your vocabulary  definitions. You do not need to take notes…

November 29- Remember all my note taking suggestions as you finish notes for section 3 (p. 189-192)!

November 28- Finish reading section 2 in chapter 8, take notes and define the vocab. terms.

November 21- Practice for your group’s Newspaper Presentations! Be sure to have notes on an index card to use while you present.

November 17- Write a 3-2-1 based on the Lewis and Clark article.

November 16- Read and highlight the article, “William and Meriwether…” Be ready to discuss the information in the article tomorrow! All newspapers should be complete. That is, all articles, pictures and advertisements should be in the template.

November 14- 16- All final drafts of articles should be saved and imported (during class) into the newspaper templates for each group. FINAL NEWSPAPERS ARE DUE ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 18th.

November 9- Write the rough draft of your article. Tomorrow you and your team will read through all the articles and make changes as necessary. Start thinking of a name for your newspaper. Be sure to check to see if the town/ city was established in 1806! ALSO- what advertisements will you include in your paper?

November 3- Nov. 10: Read and research your information for your group’s project. You are writing a historically accurate “newspaper” about the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Go to the Lewis and Clark Project page on my website and click on the links to learn more about your topic. BE SURE TO READ, READ, READ AND KNOW YOUR INFORMATION and take notes. You should start writing your article(s) by Tuesday, November 8. Be sure to share with the editor in your group to coordinate all your group’s efforts.

November 1: Finish and review “Meet Mr. Jefferson” and write out a “3-2-1″. (Remember: 3 things you learned AND why each is important, 2 things you wonder about AND what you think the answer might be and finally 1 thing you are concerned or surprised about.

October 25: Blocks 1, 3 and 4 – Finish section 2 of chapter 7 and answer the two “reviewing for Details:” questions. Block 2- Answer two of the three “Reviewing for Details” questions from section 1.

October 20: Blocks 1, 3 and 4- Read and highlight Political Parties article. Block 2- go to link “U.S. Government, Three Branches” and look for and write down the three new pieces of information.

October 19: Quiz for Block 2 class tomorrow! Other classes- go to link “U.S. Government, Three Branches” and look for three new pieces of information. Record the information.

October 17-18: Study for quiz on the three branches of the U.S. Government. Use your graphic organizer as a study guide. QUIZ is on Wednesday for Blocks 1, 3 and 4 and on Thursday for Block 2.

October 14- NO HOMEWORK (unless you have overdue work) :)

October 13- “3-2-1″ of notes from video: “Planet Earth: The Future”.

October 12- Today we talked about thesis statements and how to peer conference and revise. You get another day to make any revisions you think would make your essay better!!! ALL ESSAYS DUE TOMORROW!

October 5- Write an essay based on the choices given in class related to climate change. Remember to write in complete sentences and PARAGRAPHS! There should be a thesis statement  in your introductory paragraph to state what your thesis or main idea of the essay is. Essays are due Wednesday, October 12.

October 5-THOSE WHO HAVE PRESENTED ALREADY- write a one to two paragraph reflection. What went well? What would you change?

October 3-4: Jigsaw activity- “Mini presentations”. Prepare your presentation re. your climate change clue. Be sure to include what it is, why it is important and why it is a problem…Review the rubric. THOSE WHO HAVE PRESENTED ALREADY- write a one to two paragraph reflection. What went well? What would you change?

September 29-30: ALL quizzes need to be signed. ALL posters are due! You may do extra research on your climate change clue topic (blocks 1,3 and 4)! Block 2 will begin on Monday. Extra credit assignment ideas related to the topic will be posted soon on the S.S. Plus page!

Sept. 28- Blocks 2 and 3- Get Quiz signed. Block 2- Read and highlight the article on the Greenhouse Effect. Blocks 1, 3 and 4- Finish the article and handout questions. ALL classes- posters due on Friday! RETAKES ON THE QUIZ FOR STUDENTS WHO CAME TO SEE US– ON THURSDAY AFTER SCHOOL (unless other time arranged).

Sept. 27- Blocks 1 and 4- Quiz signatures. Blocks 1,3 and 4: Read the article on the Greenhouse Effect and work on the handout questions (up to 30 minutes or so)- if  you don’t finish you will have time tomorrow. ALL CLASSES: posters are not due until Friday. Block 2- no other homework.

September 26- Finish Earth System posters – due on Wednesday. Block 2- STUDY for quiz.

September 23- Chapter 2 quiz on Monday for Blocks 1,3 and 4. For Block 2 the quiz is on Tuesday.

September 21- Define:  Earth System, atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and lithosphere. We will discuss them and start a mini class project tomorrow. QUIZ on chapter 2 will be on Monday, September 26. EXTRA – for FIVE stamps: Explain solar energy and seasons (including solstices and equinoxes etc.) to a parent. Have your parent write a note that you did a good job explaining it :)

September 20- Click on the link: “Seasons” (a video explanation) under Physical Geography. Watch the video and come up with 5-7 good questions to ask the class. Be sure to have the answers too!

September 19- No homework unless you still need to get a quiz parent signature! BUT you can get a head start on our work this week! Click on the link: “Seasons” (a video explanation) under Physical Geography. We will be sharing it in class.

September 15- OPEN HOUSE TONIGHT! No homework.

September 13-14  Review your vocabulary terms. Quiz on Thursday (9/15)

September 12- Finish the questions that go with the map of Australia handout.

September 8- Find the coordinates in degrees (latitude and longitude) of four places in the world. One of the four must be Stonington, CT. The other three can be anywhere! We will find our mystery places together in class tomorrow:)

September 7- Ask your parents to sign your social studies letter and email me to be on the e-news list. Also, be sure to have your parent initial your student expectations handout.

September 6- Welcome! Please give the “Parent Letter” to your parents or guardians and ask them to sign it. Be sure to ask them to email me if they want to receive my social studies  e-newsletter! ALSO- check my website (you already have!)– and write one thing that you learned from somewhere on the site or from one of the suggested links.
