Happy Friday! We are so proud of how hard our kids worked last week while we were in DC. Their book projects came out so well, and really showed their deeper thinking around theme, author’s style and character development. We are showcasing them in the library so they can act as book recommendations for other students, as well as giving our kids an authentic audience. It was wonderful to have such a great report regarding their behavior, and we are very proud of them.

This week we started our Mythbuster unit. Students have been working on writing testable questions, and research skills. They have chosen a topic to research and bring through the scientific method. Don’t be surprised if your kids ask for time to watch commercials, we are also tying in persuasive skills through media. Student’s know that they must bring in their own materials for this activity, and we have encouraged not purchasing materials. Just in case your child comes home telling you you need to take them to Walmart. We will conducting experiments next Thursday in class, and determining if the myths confirmed, plausible or busted.

Next week is a bit crazy due to two days out of school. We have begun literature circles, and your child should be reading each night to keep up with the pace of the literature circle unit. This unit is centered around adventure books. I have attached the project details that will be happening later in the month.

Here are some upcoming events:
Tomorrow Mrs. E and Mrs. H and Dr. Liguori will be performing at Dancing with the Stars at the High School. Performances are 2 pm and 5 pm. Come cheer us on!
No school Tuesday, November 8th

Happy Friday,
This week we have continued our focus on theme and events leading to the main event in a story. Students should continue their reading over the weekend in their literature circles. We also spent a great deal of time talking about the multiple intelligences and taking surveys to help your child better understand themselves as a learner. Make sure to ask them what they discovered about themselves.
Thank you to everyone that attended goal conferences this week. We appreciate your support as we work with your child on setting short and long term goals.
Next week we will be beginning our first science unit of the year on basic scientific process skills. Students will be actively engaged in labs and turn into true scientists.

Hello to all of our PFISH families!

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year! We are so happy to be working with your child. For those of you with fifth grade students you will be recieving a weekly update on Fridays. This is a way to help keep our communication lines open. In addition, we are in the process of updating our PFISH website where you will be able to assess the nightly assignments, as well as upcoming events. We also catalog our weekly update on there for your convience. As we shared at Back To School Night, please always feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns. Email is always the quickest way to keep our lines of communication open, however we also available to talk on the phone or meet with you in person.

In our first four days of school we have conquered the locker fear for our fifth graders( with a special thank you to our sixth graders and their help), met new friends, and have started to settle into our new community. Students applied for classroom jobs, and we have really emphasized the importance of taking responsibility for our environment as well as our classroom tools.

Students have settled in very nicely, and we are off to an amazing start. The first few weeks are centered around routines and expectations. We have been working with your child on understanding our school wide PAWS behavior expectation, and how that looks in all of the different environments in the building. This year we will be continuing our weekly collaboration with Dr. Liguori. She came in this week to help us talk about expected and unexpected behaviors in our classroom, and as a group we outlined our expectations. Please be on the lookout for a copy of these in the future. By working together collaboratively with a strong school/home connection students will soar through their experience in “the PFISH tank.”

Our updates are usually short and sweet. We know how busy you are. They give you a quick glance of the learning that has been taking place in the room, as well as upcoming assignments or events. At the bottom of each weekly email you will see dates to remember as well as a wish list. Please know that any items that are placed on the wish list are there for a voluntary response, and please never feel any pressure to go out and purchase these items. We are often looking for donations that you may have in your house laying around.

Dates to Remember:
Goal Conferences October 5th 3:00 or 6:00 pm ( please make sure these slips are returned as soon as possible to us)

Wish List:
Medium size hermit crab cage with light

Thank you again for sharing your child with us. We look forward to working along side with you this year!
