Math
Our current unit is called Bits and Pieces II. This unit expands on the work students did in 5th grade with fractions, decimals, and percents. In this unit students will use 1/2 or 0.5 as a benchmark when estimating fractions and decimals. They will compare fractions, decimals, and percents. They will be able to order fractions and decimals on a number line. Students will be able to change fractions to decimals and percents. They will also be adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. We will also continue our work with integers. Students will learn how to multiply and divide with positive and negative numbers. Refer to the parent letter that is sent home at the beginning of each new unit to see a sample of the type of work your student is doing in class.
Students should be quick and accurate with their basic multiplication facts through 12. Continue to practice facts at home if your students have not mastered the timed fact test – 90 multiplication facts correct in 5 minutes. Students will depend on their knowledge of basic facts as they make equivalent fractions and when changing two fractions so that they have a common denominator.
