Bridge report: read and complete revision and editing questions that follow.
Students are nearing the end of a very busy week designing their bridges for competition, moving ideas onto drafting paper and estimating the amount of balsa wood needed to build their bridges. Projects are due next Friday. Homework will be minimal until then.
Due tomorrow: the six bridge questions typed or done in google docs. Proofread before you submit as spelling, grammar and punctuation will be evaluated as well as the science content. Don’t forget the sources under the “Bridges” section on this page!
Students were given an assignment yesterday; to answer one bridge question per night for 6 nights between now and the due date, next Wed, 1/25. The reason for one question per night is to focus on crafting a content-solid answer and then proofreading for spelling, punctuation and grammar. Use links on this site, notes or other references if needed. Each question is worth 10 points for a total of 60. Please submit on googledocs. (sakers@stonington.org)
Sorry for the late hour of posting… all classes have a review sheet on bridges to review for the quiz on Friday.
Topic: bridges; types of, forces that affect bridges, how tension and compression are moved from the different bridge types to the ground and the different types of loads on bridges: dead, live, thermal. All students should have these notes. The “Building Big: Bridges” link from this site under “Bridges” is a ready source for the forces and loads.
There will be a quiz on Friday: topics include types of bridges, the forces that affect bridges, how the different bridge designs move compression and tension forces off the bridge to the ground and loads that affect bridge choices and designs.
I AM VERY VERY HAPPY TO ANNOUNCE THAT ALL FRICTION LETTERS AND LAB PACKETS WERE FINISHED AT MIDNIGHT LAST NIGHT. PLEASE CHECK FOR YOUR GRADE AND COMMENTS!
The bridge unit has begun officially this week and students are building up their background knowledge this week. The independent projects that I thought I would start now as homework is being postponed. Bridge homework will be given as needed to support the material we’re learning.
Happy Holidays to both students and families!
The long friction lab and final letter/report should now be finished an submitted for grading.
Any work not handed in will result in its being graded at 60% after the vacation.
Final friction letters and completed packets are due on google docs by vacation. Lab packets should be handed in as letters are finished. If google docs is unavailable at home, final letters may be printed or sent to me through email.
